Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry is a widely respected attorney in Indianapolis, having practiced as a trial lawyer for more than 30 years in Indiana and Federal courts. His diverse trial experience from 1978 to the present has included employment as a Deputy Prosecutor in the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, as a law firm partner, and as a solo practitioner. He has served as lead counsel in more than 125 court and jury trials, arbitrations, and injunction hearings. He was elected Prosecutor in November of 2010.

While a Deputy Prosecutor, Terry was primarily responsible for prosecution of white collar crime and political corruption matters. His numerous successful prosecutions included bribery by public officials, securities fraud, Ponzi schemes, and employee embezzlements. However, he became so passionate about the work of the office that he also volunteered to take on cases outside of his area of primary responsibility. At various times at the office, Terry also served as a supervisor in one of the Marion Criminal Courts, thus supervising other Deputy Prosecutors in addition to being responsible for his own case load, and supervisor of the grand jury coordinating the full-time investigators of the Prosecutor’s office. In six years as a Deputy Prosecutor, Terry ultimately prosecuted hundreds of felony cases, including murder, robbery, burglary, forgery, theft, and drug offenses. Terry’s legal career has also included significant trial experience in complex civil matters.

As evaluated by his peers in the Indianapolis legal community, Terry has received the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethical standards. Martindale-Hubbell is a national attorney directory service which maintains a proprietary rating system based upon survey of an attorney’s peers. Terry’s rating is “AV Preeminent 5.0 out of 5.0,” which is the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethical standards.

Terry’s parents and extended family have roots in Monroe County, Indiana. Like many of his generation, Terry’s father accelerated his high school graduation to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Terry’s parents were married after the war, with his father obtaining a degree in education from Indiana University through the G.I. Bill. Terry’s father devoted his entire career to education, culminating in serving as superintendent of schools at Mooresville Consolidated Schools where a wing of the high school is now named in his honor as the William R. Curry Center.

An avid athlete, Terry enrolled at Butler University in 1967 with the benefit of academic and athletic scholarships. He pursued a pre-law curriculum at Butler, obtaining a B.A. degree in political science and history. During the tumultuous presidential campaign of 1968, Terry also acquired what would become a lifelong interest in American politics and a corresponding lifelong loyalty to the Democratic Party.

Upon completion of his fourth year at Butler, Terry enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1971. He served a two-year enlistment, including the final 18 months of assignment at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He received an honorable discharge in 1973.

After discharge from the Army, Terry initially deferred enrollment to law school in order to concentrate on raising his three-year-old daughter Melissa. Terry was employed as a reporter for theIndianapolis News from 1973 to 1975. While employed at theNews, Terry was awarded a prestigious Casper Award for a series of articles exposing “red-lining”—discriminatory lending practices—in Marion County.

Terry was subsequently able to pursue his goal of becoming a trial attorney when he was admitted to Indiana University Law School in 1975. Like his father before, Terry was able to pursue his chosen career through G.I. Bill benefits. Terry graduated with highest honors of summa cum laudein 1978.

Terry and his wife Sheila, who is also an attorney, have been married for 22 years. Both enjoy golf, tennis, biking, and other fitness activities, as well as being loyal fans of the Indiana Pacers and Indianapolis Colts. His daughter Melissa is also attorney, and Melissa and her husband Scott have a family of two sons and two daughters.

As a father, grandfather, husband, and lifelong Hoosier, Terry is committed to serving the people of Marion County.
