André Carson

Congressman André Carson, a lifelong resident of Indianapolis, was first elected to Congress in March 2008 as part of a special election and elected to his first full term in November 2008. André’s top priority is to improve the quality of life for all residents in the 7th Congressional District.
In Congress, André fights daily to improve the quality of life for hardworking families and individuals in Indianapolis. His priorities are to create and maintain well-paying jobs, for comprehensive healthcare reform, and for cutting our nation’s dependence on foreign oil. Congressman Carson serves on the important Financial Services Committee, which oversees our nation’s housing and financial services sector including, banking, insurance, real estate , public and assisted housing and securities.
He was raised and mentored by his late grandmother, Congresswoman Julia Carson. It was at her side that he developed his love for public service as she taught him the values of compassion, determination and integrity.
Congressman Carson is a graduate of Arsenal Technical High school, where his passion for law enforcement first took hold. He went on to obtain a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice Management from Concordia University-Wisconsin and a Masters in Business Management from Indiana Wesleyan University.
André’s law enforcement background consists of nearly a full decade of public service. He served as a Local Board Officer/Investigator for the Indiana State Excise Police for nine years before moving to the Department of Homeland Security where he was detailed to the Intelligence Fusion Center. There he worked in an anti-terrorism unit that helped protect Hoosiers from terrorist threats at home and abroad.
Prior to serving in Congress, André served on the Indianapolis City-County Council, where he worked hard to improve the quality of life for all residents in Indianapolis. He also served as a member of the Citizens Neighborhood Coalition and the IndyParks Kennedy-King Park Advisory boards.
André and his wife, Mariama Carson have lived in Center Township for more than five years. Mariama is a professional educator in the Pike Township Schools they are the proud parents of three-year old daughter Salimah.
